POLONIA 2050

a vision for the future of Chicago’s polish american community-

created for the horizon lines vision competition

What is horizon lines?

Horizon Lines: Visions for Chicago 2050 is a Vision contest hosted by World Business Chicago. It seeks bold, ambitious, transformative ideas for the city’s next 25 years. Finalists are featured in a public exhibition held at the Chicago Cultural Center in Summer 2026, as well as $5,000 to the winner, and $1,000 to each of five runners-up.

A Community at a turning point

Chicagoland is home to the largest Polish population outside of Poland. The Polish community of Chicago has shaped entire neighborhoods, institutions, and cultural landmarks across the city for over a century.

But today, the community is undergoing a fundamental transition.

The immigrant generations that built Polish Chicago is giving way to a new generation born and raised in Chicago. Millennials, Gen Z, and Gen Alpha are more integrated, more mobile, and less tied to traditional neighborhood structures.

At the same time, the physical and cultural infrastructure of Polonia in Chicago has not kept pace. This creates a pivotal moment of evolution, and our institutions, spaces, and identity must evolve with it. ‍ ‍

What is the Polish Heritage Corridor?

Governor J.B. Pritzker signed the Polish Heritage Corridor into law in 2023 (Public Act 102-1079) as the Milwaukee Avenue Polish Heritage Corridor Act (605 ILCS 27/). The law designates the stretch of Milwaukee Avenue (IL Route 21) from Chicago to Niles as a state-recognized Polish cultural corridor. Polonia 2050 builds on this existing designation, moving from recognition to coordinated economic and cultural development.

revitalizing Chicago’s Polish heritage corridor

Polonia 2050 proposes the revitalization of Chicago’s officially designated Polish Heritage Corridor along Milwaukee Avenue through a modern, European-inspired streetscape redesign. Our project envisions a tree-lined ‘street diet’, with expanded pedestrian space, protected bike lanes, and a central tram running on a grass covered Green-Track.

By combining urban design, cultural identity, and Environmentally sustainable transit, Polonia 2050 aims to transform Milwaukee Avenue into Chicago’s first European-style cultural boulevard and a lasting gateway to the city’s Polish heritage.

Beyond Horizon lines

Polonia 2050 proposes not only the renaissance of Milwaukee Avenue, but a renaissance of the entire Polish American community. The next chapter of Polonia will not be written through urban development alone, but through investment, leadership, and connection across continents.

Polonia 2050 will begin a community wide survey to obtain feedback on the Polish Heritage Corridor Design, but also potential community goals such as:

  • The creation of an annual Chicago-Krakow Youth-Heritage Trip

  • Moving the Annual Polish Constitution Day Parade from Columbus Drive to Milwaukee Ave

  • Educational exchange programs between Chicago Universities and Polish Universities

  • A Community Fund to purchase commercial real estate at the historic Polish Triangle
